Friends of Henthorne Park
Friends of Henthorne Park is being created in pursuit of an ambitious goal and vision for the future of our neighborhood park. This vision adds to the park without removing any existing sidewalks, playground, picnic areas or soccer practice fields. Indeed it only adds to the park.
Included in the vision is a dog park on the north side for both small and large dogs, a resurfacing of the existing tennis courts to include striping for tennis/pickle ball on three courts with the fourth court being changed into a basketball court. The existing basketball court to be removed and this area changed into a memorial garden with a small outdoor stage for Clark Youth theater performances. The last piece is the creation of a small splash pad located under the mid century modern cement pergola where the old swimming pool was located.
To accomplish such an ambitious goal will require support from the city of Tulsa and residents of the area. Visions for an entire 8 acre park, can be overwhelming, leaving you with a pie in the sky feeling. Let's pursue one goal at a time. Unless the weather is inclement, seldom during daylight hours can you find the park without a dog being walked or chasing a ball or frisbee. Occasionally you will see the empty tennis courts being used as a dog park. So Friends of Henthorne Park's first goal is getting a small portion of the north side of the park designated for use as a dog park. To do this we ask that you copy and paste then text and email the verbiage below to Jamie Fowler (city councilor) at 918-417-9971 and dist9@tulsacouncil.org or Fowlerdistrict9@outlook.com and also to Tulsa Parks Board at 918-596-7275 and tulsaparks@cityoftulsa.org.
As a resident of District 9 I would like to have a portion, less than 1/2 acre, of the north side of Henthorne Park be designated for use as a dog park. Go to www.friendsofhenthornepark.com for details.
Outlined in yellow above is the area we would recommend to be designated for a dog park. It is a small area comprised of 16,275 square feet. This is less than 1/2 acre. 3,400 square feet would be set aside for small dogs only, with the remaining 12,875 square feet designated for medium to large dogs. The north side, east sde and the fence dividing the small dog from large dog areas would have privacy slats installed. These slats along with appropriate planting of shrubs along the fencing will provide privacy for those of us walking the park pathway and for the children's play area. The entrance for the small dogs will be on the west end and the entrance for the larger dogs will be on the south side as shown in the drawing above. Having the entrances placed as such will be convenient to parking, not impede anyone walking the park path and allow for retrieval of any errant soccer balls. Both entrances will have the double gate system to allows dogs to be safely un-leashed prior to entrance.
The following are representations of items that could be installed in the dog park. In addition to these items each area will have appropriate signage, poured concrete water stations, benches placed in the shade, dog waste stations, trash cans for litter, and one table under a canopy. The large area will have a small, lockable storage shed for supplies. Each area will have a 10 foot wide locked gate for lawn equipment to enter.
